Arsenal need to pay £67.6m to sign Tammy Abraham
|Arsenal need to pay £67.6 million to sign Roma striker Tammy Abraham this summer, football.london journalist Chris Wheatley reports.
The Gunners are widely expected to bolster the centre-forward department, and it has emerged that manager Mikel Arteta is eyeing two signings.
Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus is reportedly as one of the prime targets while the Gunners are also looking to bring Abraham back to London.
It was recently claimed that the Gunners could test Roma’s resolve with a £50m bid, but the Giallorossi are set to hold out for around £67.6m.
The Serie A outfit signed him from Chelsea for £33.8m last summer. The Blues have the option to buy him back for £67.6m at the end of next season.
Roma reportedly have no plans of selling him this summer unless the same price tag is met.
Our view:
Abraham had a disappointing 2020/21 season at Chelsea, bagging just 12 goals. He was largely out-of-favour during the final months of the campaign.
This paved the way for his move to Serie A. He has made the most of the opportunity with a superb debut season. He has 24 goals and five assists for Roma.
Despite this, the Gunners should be wary of spending big on him. A top season in Italy does not necessarily mean that he would excel in the Premier League.
Romelu Lukaku netted 30 goals in Inter’s Scudetto winning season last term, but has looked out of sorts since his Chelsea return with just 12 goals to his name.
Abraham definitely has age by his side at just 24, but the Gunners would not want to spend the majority of the budget on someone, who has yet to prove himself.
They could be better off looking elsewhere. Jesus could be available for just £25.2m. Elsewhere, Brentford’s Ivan Toney with his strong hold-up play could be a decent acquisition.
The 26-year-old has 14 goals and five assists for the Bees this term. He is better aerially compared to Abraham, and should only get better with more chances created for him.
