Thomas Partey returns to Arsenal training

Arsenal have been handed a boost for the final Premier League game of the season with midfielder Thomas Partey reporting for first-team training.

The Ghana international has had another injury-plagued campaign, and has not featured for the Gunners since the 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace on April 4.

In his absence, the club have gone on to lose four of their next eight league games, and this appears likely to cost them a top four spot for another season.

Arsenal must beat Everton tomorrow, but that won’t assure them Champions League football unless Tottenham suffer a shock defeat at relegated Norwich City.

Ahead of the game, the Gunners have received a surprise injury boost with Partey being involved in a couple of full training sessions alongside his teammates.

Manager Mikel Arteta initially expressed doubts whether Partey may play again this season, but it now appears he could feature against the Toffees on Sunday.

Whether he is fit enough to make the starting XI remains to be seen. Having suffered two separate thigh injuries, Arteta could handle the £36m star with caution.

Arsenal are set for another big summer regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League or not.

The hierarchy are prepared to back Arteta with significant funds, and one of the prime priorities should be a new midfielder to provide depth and competition.

Granit Xhaka and Partey have been undisputed choices in the centre of the park when fit, but both have missed several key matches in the current campaign.

Mohamed Elneny has done a decent job as the deputy and could extend his contract, but they need more experience in case another injury crisis beckons.

Albert Sambi Lokonga has shown promise in some games, but the Belgian is still inexperienced and has been prone to losing possession in defensive situations.

As things stand, Juventus’ Arthur Melo appears back on the club’s radar after a failed winter move.
