Arsenal set to complete Marquinhos signing in 10 days

Arsenal are set to confirm the arrival of versatile winger Marquinhos after finalising a transfer fee with Brazilian side Sao Paulo, Globo Esporte claims.

The Gunners are expected to make a few marquee signings during the summer transfer window, but they are also on the look out for youngsters with potential.

Marquinhos is one of the players that has grabbed their attention. It is now reported that the club have agreed a low transfer fee of £3 million for the 19-year-old.

Sao Paulo are far from pleased with the package, but are aware that they would have lost their youngster on a free transfer otherwise due to a FIFA discrepancy.

As per FIFA rules, underage players are only to be signed on three year deals, but Sao Paulo rewarded Marquinhos with a five-year contract back in 2019.

The Gunners managed to find the loophole in his contract, and a transfer is now expected in 10 days.

Our view:

Marquinhos’ statistics at Sao Paulo are not impressive with just four goals and three assists from 42 appearances. However, the Gunners could be banking on his potential.

Technical director Edu Gaspar previously played a key role in the purchase of Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano. The 20-year-old has gone on to become a key player under manager Mikel Arteta.

It all started for him from a bright pre-season campaign in 2019. It remains to be seen whether Marquinhos can replicate Martinelli and boost his first-team prospects next season.

If not, he could be integrated into the development squad. The Gunners already have a number of youngsters waiting in the ranks. Omari Hutchinson could be one to watch out for.

The versatile forward bagged eight goals and seven assists for the Under 23s last term. He could be one of the graduates tried by Arteta during next season’s Europa League group stage.
