William Saliba delivers masterclass performance on Arsenal debut

William Saliba made a stunning start to his Arsenal career last night with a masterclass performance against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The Frenchman joined the Gunners from Saint-Etienne three years ago, but had to wait until last night at Selhurst Park to make his competitive debut.

It was definitely one to remember as the Frenchman was comfortable at the ball at his feet, and did not put a foot wrong over the course of 90 minutes.

He controlled the game with his clever positioning and composure, and there were no surprises that he was adjudged the man of the match by the fans.

As per Squawka, the 21-year-old completed 94 per cent of his passes attempted with seven ball recoveries, six clearances while winning three of his duels.

Saliba played like a seasoned professional in his first-ever appearance for the Gunners, and he has certainly enhanced his ever-growing reputation.

Arsenal have not had the best of times against Palace over the years. Prior to yesterday, they had just one win in eight meetings against the London club.

It was certainly a statement from Mikel Arteta and his team yesterday as they made a quick start which contributed to Gabriel Martinelli’s opener.

They had to dig deep in the second half with Palace coming at them, but Aaron Ramsdale was superb between the sticks after a nervous start to the derby.

A late own goal from Marc Guehi eventually sealed a 2-0 win for the Gunners.

The club’s curtain-raiser went as planned with a solid win, and they now have the chance to replicate the showing against Leicester City on August 13.

Saliba has definitely nailed his place in the starting XI on the back of yesterday’s showing. The Frenchman will be eager to impress again in his full home debut.

Arsenal are on the look out for more signings, but should also make it a priority to commit Saliba to a new deal as soon as possible – current one expiring in June 2024.
