Aston Villa register interest in Rob Holding

Aston Villa are interested in acquiring the services of Rob Holding, according to a recent report from Estadiodeportivo.

Due to the unfortunate ruptured Achilles tendon suffered by Diego Carlos in his official home debut against Everton on Saturday, Villa are in need of another defensive acquisition before the end of the transfer window with Carlos set to miss about nine months of action.

Consequently, Steven Gerrard’s men have now set their sights on a potential deal for Rob Holding, who could become the second player to leave Arsenal for Aston Villa since the turn of the year, following in the footsteps of Calum Chambers.

Holding’s exit would be in the best interest of all parties

As seen in the cases of Lucas Torreira, Pablo Mari, Nuno Tavares, Bernd Leno and Hector Bellerin, Arsenal have prioritised parting ways with a vast majority of their fringe players whether on a permanent basis or a short-term loan.

Rob Holding clearly falls into the category above and a move away from the Emirates Stadium should be his priority at the moment as he is unlikely to feature in Mikel Arteta’s plans more than ever due to the re-emergence of William Saliba.

The Englishman is yet to feature in any of Arsenal’s opening two Premier League games with his last outing coming back in a pre-season friendly against Orlando City just under a month ago.

Holding is expected to get more regular playing minutes at Villa Park, which would aid a stunted development phase over the last couple of seasons in North London.

While securing a place in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in November looks to be an insurmountable task at the moment, an impressive spell in claret and blue could see Holding force his way into Gareth Southgate’s long-term thinking for the Three Lions after November’s global footballing showpiece in Qatar.
