Arsenal must focus on extending Martinelli’s contract

Arsenal continued their fine start to the Premier League campaign yesterday with an impressive 3-1 win over north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka were the goalscorers for the Gunners, but there were also several other stand-out performers.

Martinelli particularly caught the eye with his terrific dribbling from the left flank, and his efforts eventually paid off with an assist for Xhaka’s goal.

Aside from his goal contribution, the £36 million-rated star completed 95 per cent of his passes with four successful take-ons and seven ground duels won.

The 21-year-old became an undisputed starter under manager Mikel Arteta during the back end of last season and he is now beaming with confidence.

There are still some improvements to be made with his crossing and finishing in the box, but the Brazilian has certainly made the most of his opportunities.

Three goals and one assist this season is an impressive return for the youngster, and the hierarchy must now ensure that they secure his long-term future.

Bukayo Saka’s contract has been a main topic of speculation in recent weeks with his deal expiring in June 2024, but the same is the case for Martinelli.

In our opinion, the Gunners must simultaneously negotiate renewals for both wingers as they are now regarded as undisputed starters when fit and available.

As things stand, both players will enter the final year of their contracts next summer, and the board need to avoid the prospect of falling into that situation.

Aside from the attacking pair, William Saliba is another emerging prospect that falls into the same category.

The next few months should be pivotal for the Gunners as they aim to keep the core of the squad together.

The club just missed on Champions League football last season, but their brilliant start this campaign gives them a brilliant chance to end a six-year wait.
