Arteta ready to give opportunities to ‘special’ Nelson

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken glowingly about Reiss Nelson ahead of the Europa League group stage clash against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

The north London giants have been tremendous in the early part of the campaign. They have lost just one of their nine matches across all competitions.

They will be aiming to continue the fine form tomorrow and ahead of the game, Arteta has hinted that Nelson could be in line for his first appearance of the season.

Nelson spent the previous campaign on loan with Feyenoord where he was decent with four goals and seven assists from 33 appearances in all competitions.

His current season was disrupted by a muscle injury, but he is now fully fit to make his comeback.

Speaking in today’s press conference, Arteta said that the club wanted him back this campaign to see whether they can take him to the next level in his career.

The Spaniard added that Nelson is a ‘special’ player and will now have an opportunity to impress.

He said via football.london: “We wanted him back to see if we can take him to the next level. Reiss is special and now he is going to have an opportunity.”

Nelson has been a fringe player in the Gunners ranks over recent seasons. He has not progressed in the way that Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe have.

While Saka and Smith Rowe have made the most of their opportunities, the same can’t be said for Nelson, who has gone off the radar over the past few years.

He still has time on his hands to change his fortunes. At 22, he needs to start playing regularly and it remains to be seen whether he can impress in the Cup games.

With his contract expiring next summer, he is practically playing for his future at the club.
