Mikel Arteta sympathises with Gabriel Jesus after Southampton draw

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was sympathetic with Gabriel Jesus following his disappointing performance against Southampton in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has been a revelation for the Gunners since his summer move from Manchester City. He has contributed five goals and five assists thus far.

He should have added to that tally at St Mary’s but failed to do so after squandering big chances in either half.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw, Arteta said that Jesus should have put his chances away and the Brazilian will obviously be disappointed with his showing.

He told Arsenal.com: “I’m sure that today he will be disappointed because he had the chances to put them away.”

“Knowing Gabby, he’s disappointed when he scores two goals and could have scored three or four, so he can do that.

“But he’s having the chances and he’s always there. He gives so much to the team and it’s a shame he couldn’t put them away today.”

Jesus has been one of the Gunners’ best performers during the ongoing campaign, but the Brazilian could not capitalise on his scoring opportunities today.

After the game, he admitted that the draw felt like a defeat. Hopefully, he will come up with a strong response against Nottingham Forest next weekend.

Despite today’s stalemate, the Gunners are still deservedly top of the Premier League table with 28 points, two ahead of reigning champions Manchester City.

The Gunners have three more league games before the World Cup break. Across all competitions, the club have another six matches to go before the tournament.

The first of those will be against PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Arsenal need just one point from the game to finish top of Group A.
