How Chelsea can help Arsenal take 10-point lead in title race

Arsenal moved seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League on New Year’s Eve following their impressive 4-2 win at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Pep Guardiola’s side played out a frustrating 1-1 draw against Everton at home on the same day and they now face another difficult challenge against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Based on recent form, City should be favourites to beat the Blues on the road, but Graham Potter’s side will have a point to prove, having picked up just six points from the last 21 available to them.

The Blues are already seven points adrift of the Champions League positions and there should be a good response when the holders make the trip to west London this week.

Arsenal can temporarily take a 10-point lead at the top with a victory over Newcastle United tomorrow and rivals Chelsea could do them a big favour by making it permanent.

The Blues are one of the teams that have generally fared well against Guardiola’s men. In the last eight meetings between them, they have won exactly half of those matches.

Of course, a couple of those wins have come in the Cup competitions – with one in the Champions League final but Gunners fans can be optimistic of Chelsea giving a good fight.

As manager Mikel Arteta said, Arsenal must only focus on themselves and the challenges ahead, but they will need some assistance along the way to pile the pressure on City.

The Mancunian giants are still considered massive favourites to lift the Premier League title for a third-straight occasion despite them dropping five points from the last three games.

The Gunners’ main aim should be to prolong the five-match winning streak and increase the lead as much as possible such that they can cope with a poor run of results later on.
