Arsenal target free transfer deal for Marcus Thuram

Arsenal are one of the clubs interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram on a free transfer this summer, according to Sport.

The Frenchman was in scintillating form for the Bundesliga outfit before the World Cup break, bagging 13 goals and four assists across all competitions.

This led to fierce speculation that the 25-year-old could be sold in January but he ended up staying despite his contract expiring at the end of the season.

It is now reported that Barcelona are courting interest in the World Cup finalist but they are not alone with plenty of attention from clubs in England.

The Gunners are one of those looking to land him on a Bosman deal this summer.

Thuram would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal

Thuram has been hugely impressive as the main striker for Monchengladbach this season, but he is also capable of playing from from the left wing.

The Frenchman has good pace, a physical presence and likes to dribble regularly. He is well suited for the Premier League with his tireless work rate.

On a free transfer, he would be a shrewd signing for any top European club. If he wants to join Arsenal, Thuram should be willing to accept a reduced role.

It is unlikely that he will start regularly under manager Mikel Arteta, but should get valuable minutes in rotation. The 25-year-old would add quality and depth.

The Gunners look on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League and this should only increase the workload on some of the main starters.

Arteta has had the luxury of rotating half of his side in the Europa League, but this ploy may not work in the Champions League with tougher opposition.

The added workload could result in potential injuries. Hence, Arsenal will need sufficient cover in the squad and Thuram would be a handy addition.
