Jorginho impresses in full Arsenal debut vs Man City
|Jorginho produced an impressive performance in his full Arsenal debut against Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The Italian was a surprise starter against the Cityzens yesterday after an injury for Thomas Partey in training. There were genuine doubts that he could be the weak link.
However, the 31-year-old managed to prove his credentials with a superb display. Though the Gunners were on the losing end, the midfielder was brilliant with his showing.
Over 90 minutes, Jorginho had 73 touches with 58 passes and three long balls. He made three interceptions as well as a superb goal-line clearance to deny Ilkay Gundogan.
Jorginho makes his mark in first Arsenal start
When the news of Partey’s injury came in, the first thought for Arsenal fans was how they could cope without the Ghanaian, who has been instrumental to the club’s success.
However, Jorginho stepped up in midfield for the north London giants. It was the defence that let down the club in the disappointing 3-1 loss to the reigning champions.
Arsenal have now dropped eight points from the last three outings. As a result, City have leapfrogged them to the top of the table on goal difference, having played a game more.
The Premier League title is far from over but they must respond against Aston Villa on the road on Saturday. It could be another big challenge with the Villains playing well.
Unai Emery has transformed the fortunes of the West Midlands outfit and Arsenal will need to work hard to return to winning ways. Jorginho will have a huge role to play again.
The extent of Partey’s injury is unknown but Arsenal are unlikely to take a risk with him, given his injury record. Jorginho will be eyeing his first win in the Gunners shirt.
