Jorginho stars for Arsenal in fantastic win at Newcastle

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho produced a fantastic performance during the 2-0 Premier League win at Newcastle United this evening.

The Italian recently played 86 minutes of the 3-1 victory over Chelsea but it was anticipated that Thomas Partey could replace him in the number six position against the Magpies.

However, manager Mikel Arteta decided to stick with him for the visit of St James’ Park. He managed to prove his credentials with a composed display in the centre of the park.

Over 90 minutes, Jorginho managed 71 touches, completing 44 out of his 53 passes. He won seven ground duels and three tackles while making two interceptions and two clearances.

The Italian also bagged the assist for Martin Odegaard’s goal.

Prior to the game, there were questions raised over how he could handle the physicality of the Magpies and Jorginho showed his class with some terrific positioning and ball control.

The 31-year-old was signed as a back-up option in midfield in January. He has now started back-to-back games for the Gunners despite Partey being fit and available for selection.

Jorginho has capitalised on Partey’s recent inconsistent form to become a mainstay and he will be hoping to end the season on a high.

Meanwhile, today’s win has put the Gunners within one point of leaders Manchester City, but the latter have a game in hand.

Arsenal no longer have control of the title race and their chances depend on City faltering over their next four league matches.

The Gunners need to win their remaining three games and hope for Pep Guardiola’s side to stumble at the final hurdle.
