Mikel Arteta issues update on Arsenal’s summer transfer plans

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that the club will be active in the upcoming transfer window.

Despite sitting on top of the Premier League table for large spells of the current season, Arsenal are set to finish as runners-up to Manchester City.

Arsenal’s drop in form between mid and late April, which looks set to ultimately cost them a first league crown since 2004, coincided with the absence of William Saliba, who has been one of the – if not the – best centre-back in English football this term.

As Arsenal prepare for a return to the Champions League and possibly mount another title challenge, Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta expects significant additions to his squad next summer, although he did also admit that the players remaining at the club also have to step up even further.

“We’re still there, with two games to go we can still be champions against probably the best team in Premier League history,” Arteta said, as relayed by The Athletic.

“We have made a lot of good steps and strong steps in that journey and we have to continue. That never ends.

“We want to be better and the rest will be better, then the margins will be higher and we have to start to live with those standards and improve and be smarter.

“That doesn’t mean only signing players. It’s to improve our own players. There are players that we haven’t had the best out of them this season.

“There are a few players where they haven’t had the minutes or the performances and we have to seek as well for those players to give us a different edge – it’s not only about signing players.”

Having recently tied Aaron Ramsdale down to a new deal, Arsenal are showing a much greater desire to keep hold of their best players than they have in previous years with Bukayo Saka also closing in on a contract extension.
