Granit Xhaka undergoing medical ahead of Bayer Leverkusen transfer

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has travelled to Cologne for his medical ahead of his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, Bild report.

The Switzerland international had an impressive 2022/23 campaign with the Gunners, scoring nine goals and registering seven assists from 47 appearances across all competitions.

His performances won the trust of the fans after a mixed relationship in the past. The 30-year-old has now decided to secure a return to the German Bundesliga with Leverkusen.

According to Bild, the former Arsenal captain has been spotted at the Mediapark Clinic in Cologne where he is undergoing his mandatory medical tests for the transfer.

The midfielder is on course to sign a four-year contract with the Bundesliga outfit, and manager Xabi Alonso believes the Swiss will take his team to the next level next season.

Xhaka will leave with Declan Rice’s arrival

It has been known for some time that Xhaka will head for the exit door. The midfielder agreed personal terms with Leverkusen in May, but the move has been delayed for a while.

Arsenal are expected to confirm the signing of Declan Rice in a club-record deal this week. His arrival is expected to pave the way for Xhaka’s return to Germany with Leverkusen.

It was initially reported that Arsenal could receive €15m from the move, but The Athletic revealed earlier this week that Arsenal could receive as much as €25m from the Bundesliga side.

In our view, this would represent a good piece of business for Arsenal. They have found the right time to part ways with Xhaka after a fine season. He may struggle to repeat the feat.
