Arsenal remain in the race to sign Elye Wahi

Arsenal could go head-to-head with Chelsea to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi this summer, according to Foot Mercato.

The 20-year-old was in impressive form for Montpellier in the French top-flight last season. He scored 19 goals and provided another six assists from 33 appearances.

Chelsea are already planning talks with the French outfit to sign the promising youngster, but it is now reported that the Gunners also ‘remain in the race’ for him.

Foot Mercato say that the Gunners are preparing for the departure of Folarin Balogun this summer, and Wahi could be his replacement ahead of the new season.

Montpellier are willing to consider the striker’s exit for €30 million.

Arsenal should keep Balogun over signing Wahi

The Frenchman made an impressive 25 goal contributions for Montpellier last term, but we don’t believe he would be an upgrade on Balogun for the new campaign.

Arsenal are looking for £50m (€58m) to part ways with Balogun. They are probably eyeing Wahi as a cheaper replacement once he heads for the exit door.

Balogun is reluctant to play back-up to Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah next season after registering an impressive 22 goals during his loan spell with Reims.

We would personally prefer the club to keep him for another year.

Suppose they can’t convince him to stay, the hierarchy should consider moving for a target man.

Arsenal are said to have an interest in Porto’s Mehdi Taremi, who is valued at around €20m.

Taremi is already 30 years of age, but could provide a different dimension to Arsenal’s attack off the bench. He is strong when it comes to contesting aerial duels.

The Iranian is coming off a brilliant season at Porto where he scored 31 goals and provided 14 assists. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen.
