Arsenal announce the arrival of Jurrien Timber

Arsenal have completed the acquisition of Jurrien Timber from Ajax for an initial €40 million plus a further €5m in add-ons.

Timber is Arsenal’s second signing of the summer transfer window following the earlier of Kai Havertz from Chelsea.

Capable of playing as a right-back alongside his natural centre-back position, Timber provides a good level of tactical flexibility to Mikel Arteta, who is already looking forward to working with the Dutchman.

“We’re really excited that Jurrien has joined us,” Arteta told Arsenal’s oficial website.

“He is a versatile young defender, who will fit into our system and provide our squad with so much added quality – Jurrien is a young player, but has already achieved so much.

“He has experienced what it’s like to go to a major international tournament on more than one occasion, as well as the trophies he has won with Ajax.

“We look forward to welcoming and integrating Jurrien into the squad.”

Timber is expected to team up with his new teammates before they fly out to the United States on Sunday for the continuation of their pre-season tour which kicked off with a 1-1 stalemate against German lower league side Nurnberg yesterday.

However, Timber is not expected to be the newest member of the Arsenal squad on board with the Gunners currently putting the finishing touches on a club-record deal to sign Declan Rice from West Ham United.

Off the back of their best league season in over a decade last time out where they finished second behind Manchester City, Arsenal are showing great intent in the transfer market as they look to mount another title charge and enjoy a successful return to the Champions League next season.
