Arsenal could trump Liverpool to sign Romeo Lavia

Arsenal could trump Liverpool to sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia this summer, according to Belgian outlet DH.

The Gunners have been very active in the current transfer window, and they have already signed Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber for a combined fee of more than £200 million.

A defensive midfielder could be pursued if Thomas Partey heads for the exit door. Lavia has been linked for many weeks, and DH claim that the Gunners could have the upper hand over Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently negotiating the potential exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Al Ettifaq and Al Ittihad respectively. They could turn to Lavia based on the duo’s future.

Arsenal are likewise relying on Partey to leave to land the teenager, but DH say that Arsenal could ‘overtake’ the Reds in the race. Manager Mikel Arteta has made him a priority if Partey is sold.

Arsenal need to speed up Partey sale to land Lavia

Liverpool are currently in advanced talks to offload Fabinho to Al Ittihad. If he were to leave, the Reds are considering several options including Lavia, Sofyan Amrabat and Ryan Gravenberch.

The Merseyside outfit regard the £50m price tag for Lavia as ‘excessive’, but Arsenal still need to be wary of them as they tend to complete player deals within days unlike other teams.

In our view, the Gunners need to speed up Partey’s sale so that they don’t miss out on Lavia. Arteta’s interest is unsurprising as he is an admirer of budding talent with potential.

Lavia had a top performance in the 3-3 draw against Arsenal back in April. He won five duels and three tackles in that game alongside three clearances and two successful take-ons.

Arsenal made a superb late comeback to draw 3-3 from 3-1 down, but Lavia was off the pitch by then.

At just 19, Lavia has shown plenty of maturity as a starter. He has excelled with his distribution, tackling, duel-winning ability. He likes to dribble his way into forward positions.

Lavia could be considered as an understudy to Rice at Arsenal in the number six role, but the duo could also play together against tough opposition such as Manchester City.
