Gabby Agbonlahor insists Arsenal do not need David Raya, urges club to prioritise another defensive midfielder instead

Gabriel Agbonlahor has told Arsenal they need to prioritise signing another defensive midfielder ahead of a new goalkeeper.

The Gunners want quality competition for England international Aaron Ramsdale and are interested in his Brentford counterpart David Raya.

The Spain international has agreed to join Arsenal, and both clubs are now in talks as they look to strike a deal over a fee.

However, Agbonlahor reckons they should look to bolster their options in the middle of the park instead, recommending Brighton & Hove Albion ace Moises Caicedo.

“I think Ramsdale is good on the ball from the back,” the former Premier League star told talkSPORT.

“I think last season he made a few mistakes, and I don’t think anybody saw this coming. If you had said at the end of the season that Arsenal would be going for another goalkeeper, no one would have believed you.

“So it is very strange to see. I do not think they need David Raya, I think they should use that money somewhere else

“They have lost Granit Xhaka. Thomas Partey gets a lot of injuries. You need more numbers in there, Champions League football is coming, I think they need one more defensive midfielder, Caicedo would be perfect.”

Ramsdale is one of the best goalies in the land, and while Raya is better than him on the ball, they could indeed use that money elsewhere.

Brentford want around £40 million for their man, but they could eventually do business for less.

Brighton want almost £100m to sell Caicedo to suitors, and Arsenal are unwilling to pay that much after spending a club-record fee on Declan Rice.

Arteta has Jorginho as an option and it appears he is not looking to sign any more midfielders with Partey now staying.

Arsenal have a squad two-deep in every outfield position at the moment, and while replicating the same thing in goal would be huge, they really could do with more outfield signings.

They need all the quality depth they can get if they want to impress across all competitions next term, and Arteta has to make the right choices.
