Aaron Ramsdale reacts as David Raya makes brilliant save in Arsenal training
|Spanish goalkeeper David Raya is already impressing at Arsenal, keeping a clean sheet during the 60 minutes he spent on the pitch in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Luton Town yesterday.
He joined on a season-long loan from Brentford earlier this week and is ready to pip Aaron Ramsdale to the starting berth.
The England international knows he has to be on top of his game in every match to retain his spot in the starting XI, and he has been impressed with Raya’s quality in training.
Arsenal uploaded a short video of their training session ahead of Monday’s trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace, and Ramsdale can be seen reacting to a brilliant save from Raya 32 seconds into the clip.
The Englishman clapped his hands after seeing the Spaniard keep the ball out of his net with an acrobatic save. Raya wants to do everything to make sure the Gunners activate the option to sign him permanently next summer, and he is well-motivated.
Manager Mikel Arteta has already admitted that Arsenal signed the Spain international as he has better qualities for their style of play.
Raya’s futsal background makes him the perfect ball-playing goalie, and his ability to play long passes that can take out the opponents’ midfield and land in the paths of the forwards is a huge quality the Gunners can do with.
Not many teams boast two top goalkeepers in their squad, and how Arteta plans to make this work will be interesting to see.
Ramsdale is expected to start against Palace, but every touch, catch and kick he makes and takes will be evaluated and scrutinised, and the competition should make him and Raya better going forward.
