Arsenal due £1.7 million in sell-on as West Ham United complete Konstantinos Mavropanos signing

West Ham United have announced the signing of Greece international centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos, which is good news for Arsenal financially.

The 25-year-old joined Stuttgart permanently last summer after three loan spells away from the Gunners but has now sealed a Premier League return worth an initial £17 million.

Arsenal included a 10% sell-on agreement in the £3m deal that took Mavropanos to the Bundesliga club last year and are set to earn £1.7m from his sale to West Ham.

They could also be due an additional £300,000 going forward if their former player meets the conditions which would activate another £3m in add-ons and take the total package to £20m.

Mavropanos joined Arsenal from Super League Greece club PAS Giannina in January 2018, but only made just eight appearances before leaving on loan for Nurnberg in January 2020.

A groin injury in October 2018 kept the centre-back out of action until January 2019, and he spent some time playing for the under-21s to gain match fitness, putting in some impressive performances.

Mavropanos spent the next two seasons on loan with Stuttgart before completing a permanent move, establishing himself as a key player for them as they survived relegation in both of the last two seasons.

The centre-back will be eager to prove himself in the Premier League after not getting the chance with the Gunners, and it will be intriguing to see how things go.

Arsenal host West Ham on boxing day and Mavropanos will be looking forward to playing at Emirates Stadium again.

The Gunners have spent over £200m this summer on four signings and could do with some financial boost as they look to further bolster their squad, and getting a £1.7m windfall from a deal on one of their former players is timely.
