Gary Neville feels Aaron Ramsdale will ask to leave Arsenal soon

Manchester United legend Gary Neville feels Aaron Ramsdale will ask to leave Arsenal if he continues to play second fiddle to David Raya between the sticks.

Ramsdale was the Gunners’ undisputed number one for two years, but manager Mikel Arteta made the surprise decision to pick Raya over him against Everton.

Raya, who was signed on an initial loan from Brentford, kept a clean sheet at Goodison Park and managed another shut-out against PSV Eindhoven in Europe.

The Spaniard conceded twice in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, but he made a couple of brilliant saves during the course of the derby.

Speaking on the Stick to Football Podcast, Neville said that Ramsdale is going to have to knock on Mikel Arteta’s door to play some elsewhere if his situation continues like this.

He said: “If it carries on like this, he’s [Aaron Ramsdale] going to have to knock on [Mikel Arteta’s] door and say ‘look, I need to play football somewhere else if it carries on like this’.”

Ramsdale faces questions over his Arsenal future

The England international was an undisputed starter in goal for the Gunners in the Premier League after taking charge from Bernd Leno in September 2021.

The arrival of Raya led to questions over Ramsdale’s future, but the 25-year-old managed to keep his place in the next three games against Crystal Palace, Fulham and Manchester United.

Arteta surprised many fans and pundits with the decision to pick Raya after the international break. He has continued to stick with the Spaniard which raises doubts over Ramsdale’s position.

The €40 million-rated star is currently the back-up goalkeeper to Jordan Pickford for the Three Lions, and he could genuinely risk losing his national team spot due to the lack of playing time.

Ramsdale is likely to start in the Carabao Cup third round tie against Brentford tonight, but he could contemplate his future at the club if Arteta considers him as no more than a back-up option.
