Aaron Ramsdale admits he is hurting after losing Arsenal spot to David Raya

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has admitted he is ‘suffering’ and ‘hurting’ after losing his first team berth to summer arrival David Raya.

Ramsdale was Arsenal’s undisputed last line of defence last season, keeping 15 clean sheets in 41 outings across all competitions.

However, Raya’s arrival has limited the former Sheffield United shot-stopper to just four Premier League appearances this term, having also featured in the Community Shield and Carabao Cup.

Since starting Arsenal’s initial four Premier League fixtures, Ramsdale has failed to make an appearance in the subsequent four, with Raya relegating his English counterpart to the bench.

The 25-year-old is wary of losing his place in the national team and is desperate to turn his fortunes around to bolster his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

“I need to get back into my club team to keep getting picked [for England)] and keep giving the manager a headache because if I’m not, then that’s an easier decision for him,” Ramsdale said (via The Mirror).

“It is the first time I have found myself in this situation. The manager here [Southgate] is brilliant – he trusts the players he’s worked with before.

“You’ll see Kalvin [Phillips] and Harry [Maguire] haven’t played the most amount of minutes, but when they step up for England and are given the opportunity, they perform.

“So if if that’s the case for myself and I do get shown that trust to play another game if I haven’t played for my club, then I will have to repay him.

“There are days when I come in, and I’m down because of the situation and he [Raya] picks me up and, for whatever reason.

“There might be a day where he’s down, and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing, I have to stand up and be able to push him and make sure he’s ready if he’s picked to play.”

Arsenal are preparing for their weekend trip to Stamford Bridge where they will take on Chelsea in a mouth-watering London derby showdown.

Neither Ramsdale nor Raya got any action during the international break so it will be intriguing to see who makes Mikel Arteta’s starting XI on Saturday.
