Ian Wright singles out Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu for his dependability and consistency after performance against Sevilla

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has showered praise on Japan international defender Takehiro Tomiyasu for his brilliant performance against Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The versatile 24-year-old featured at left-back as the Gunners ran out 2-1 winners over the La Liga side and was impressive in the position, with Gunners fans voting him as their man of the match after the game.

It was Tomiyasu’s fourth start in all competitions in 2023-24, and it turned out to be one of his best performances in the Arsenal colours.

Wright has been impressed with the consistency of the versatile Japanese defender, and he gave him flowers on the Wrighty’s House podcast.

“I’m always happy seeing Tomiyasu start because nothing is getting past him,” the former striker said.

“And in the first-half, he should have hit the target with his chance as well.

“He’s so reliable, strength, positional awareness. When he gets on the ball, he has no problem getting it forward, passing it and progressing it. It is very rare that you see anyone get past him.

“He is one of those dependable players. Dependable player. 8 out of 10 every week. Dependable.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta opted to start Tomiyasu ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko given the physicality of the game, and the former Bologna star did not disappoint as he made his 11th appearance of the season.

He has also featured at right-back and centre-back so far this term, and having a defender capable of playing excellently well across the backline is a huge blessing for the Gunners.

Tomiyasu has not put a foot wrong during the campaign and will hope to remain reliable and important to the team going forward.
