Gabriel Jesus congratulates Eddie Nketiah after England international striker bagged hat-trick in Arsenal 5-0 win against Sheffield United
|Arsenal blew Sheffield United out of the water at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, strolling to a 5-0 victory thanks to a hat-trick from England international striker Eddie Nketiah and goals from Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
The Gunners remain unbeaten after ten Premier League games in 2023-24 having picked up seven wins and three draws, with two points separating them from league leaders Tottenham Hotspur.
Arsenal were without Brazil international Gabriel Jesus against the Blades after he was withdrawn against Sevilla on Tuesday due to a hamstring issue, and manager Mikel Arteta picked Nketiah to lead the line in his absence.
The one-cap Three Lions forward did not disappoint, notching three goals, and Jesus was impressed.
The Brazilian took to his Instagram Story to react to Nketiah’s performance after the game, sending this message to him.
The 24-year-old has now bagged five league goals this term and will be feeling pretty confident going forward this term.
Arsenal return to action on Wednesday with a trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham United in the round of 16 of the Carabao Cup before travelling to St. James Park to face Newcastle United in the Premier League next Saturday.
Nketiah will likely start both games with Jesus still unavailable for selection, and he will be keen to impress in those games ahead of Sevilla’s visit in the Champions League.
The Arsenal academy graduate has largely played second fiddle to Jesus since the Brazilian arrived from Manchester City, and he will be desperate to establish himself as the team’s first-choice striker.
Nketiah impressed today and he could end up establishing himself ahead of Jesus in the pecking order if he keeps putting in similar five-star performances consistently as he did against Sheffield United.
