Declan Rice impresses for Arsenal in frustrating Newcastle defeat

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice produced an impressive performance during the 1-0 Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

The Gunners played out an even contest against the Magpies at St James’ Park, but they came on the losing side in the end after a contentious goal from Anthony Gordon.

The ball initially appeared to go off the line near the corner flag on the left flank while Gabriel Magalhaes was also fouled by Joelinton in the lead-up to Gordon’s goal.

There was also suspicion of a hand ball by Joelinton, but VAR judged the goal as a fair one. Arsenal were unlucky to be on the losing side, but there were positives from the game.

William Saliba had another strong showing in the heart of the defence for Arsenal while Rice also caught the eye with his performance from the central midfield role.

Over 90 minutes, the 24-year-old had 73 touches with 51 accurate passes. He won 100 per cent of his dribbles alongside four duels and completed four long balls.

Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the league campaign yesterday, but they deserved at least a point against the Magpies, who were lucky to finish the game with 10 men.

Bruno Guimaraes intentionally elbowed Jorginho during the opening half but VAR surprisingly let go of the incident. It was a clear red card offence in our opinion.

Arsenal will be in Champions League action against Sevilla at the Emirates on Wednesday. They have the opportunity to book their place in the last 16 if Lens beat PSV in the other game.

Rice should continue from the number eight role. Hopefully, captain Martin Odegaard will be deemed fit to start in the attacking midfield position ahead of Kai Havertz.
