Mikel Arteta rules out Jesus for Sevilla game, Odegaard doubtful
|Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided an injury update on two players ahead of the Champions League group stage clash against Sevilla on Wednesday.
The Gunners suffered their first Premier League defeat of the campaign on Saturday. Newcastle United won by a 1-0 scoreline after a controversial goal in the second half.
Arteta will want a strong response from his side against Sevilla tomorrow and ahead of the game, he has provided an update on two players who have been on the sidelines.
Jesus picked up a hamstring injury in the reverse fixture against the La Liga outfit where he registered a goal and an assist. Arteta clarified that he won’t be fit for the game.
Meanwhile, club captain Martin Odegaard played a cameo in the Carabao Cup defeat at West Ham United, but he was not fit to make the squad against Newcastle.
When pressed on his availability, the manager said that the €90 million-rated star is still uncertain.
He told Arsenal.com: “Gabriel [Jesus] won’t be fit. With Martin, it’s still uncertain. The rest, no news so far.”
Arsenal were on the wrong side of a 1-0 defeat at the weekend. Gabriel Magalhaes was clearly fouled in the lead-up to Anthony Gordon’s goal but VAR refused to rule it out.
Arteta had stern words to say about the refereeing after the game and he will want a good reaction from his players when they entertain Sevilla in the Champions League tomorrow.
The Gunners are currently on six points after three group matches. A victory over Sevilla would secure their round of 16 berth, provided Lens beat PSV Eindhoven in the other game.
