English and foreign clubs have expressed an interest in signing Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan during the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.
The England international has found himself playing second fiddle in the Premier League to David Raya since September, and the report claims “there is only so long he can wait in the wings before he has to consider a future elsewhere.”
Ramsdale, 25, is set to make his first league start since September 3 against Brentford on Saturday as Raya is ineligible to face his parent club due to Premier League regulations.
However, it remains to be seen whether he will retain his place in the Arsenal starting XI afterwards regardless of how he performs.
Ramsdale knows he has to play regularly ahead of Euro 2024 if he is to have any chance of breaking into the England starting XI.
He could end up missing out entirely of the squad itself if he keeps struggling for playing chances at club level, with the likes of Nick Pope, Sam Johnstone, James Trafford and Jason Steele starting regularly at Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Brighton and Hove Albion, respectively.
He was dubbed ‘phenomenal’ by Arsenal goalkeeping legend David Seaman in March, and will fancy his chances of becoming a starter elsewhere.
However, the message to Ramsdale has been that the door is not closed on him returning as Arsenal’s first choice.
He also believes he can regain his spot and his levels have not dropped in the training sessions nor has his attitude changed.
Arsenal could hesitate about letting him leave on loan in January as that would leave Karl Hein as the only other senior goalkeeping option, and it will be intriguing to see what happens between now and then.
