Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu shares latest injury update on social media following calf issue

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu will miss the festive fixtures due to a calf injury and is unlikely to feature again for the North London club this year.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the news yesterday and the Japan international has taken to Instagram to share his frustrations with his fitness problems.

Tomiyasu went down holding his calf in the 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, and scans have confirmed he will be out of action for a while.

“I’m sick of being injured,” the Arsenal star posted.

“But I believe this is the opportunity to be much stronger.”

A knee injury in March ruled Tomiyasu out of the business end of last season as he had to undergo surgery to fix the problem.

He suffered a calf injury in February 2022, spending two months on the sidelines, and it is clear to see why he is getting frustrated with his frequent visits to the treatment room.

The 25-year-old recently managed to force his way back into the Arsenal starting XI having lost his berth to Ben White last term, and being without him at a time when the games are coming in thick and fast is a huge blow.

The Gunners are now without Jurrien Timber, Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey at the back, and manager Mikel Arteta could hand some of the youth players in the position an opportunity in the coming days.

Jakub Kiwior featured at left-back against Luton Town yesterday before he was withdrawn for Oleksandr Zinchenko, and fans will get to see more of the Poland international following the injury blow to his Japanese counterpart.

The Asian Cup starts on January 12, so Tomiyasu may not play for Arsenal until after the competition from the look of things as he will have to report to training camp earlier in the New Year.

They face Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Liverpool, West Ham United and Fulham in their final league games of 2023, and how they fare in those games will have a huge say on their title chances.
