Arsenal spot in latest UEFA coefficient ranking revealed

Back in the Champions League after a six-year hiatus, Arsenal steamrolled to a top-placed finish, beating Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven to the punch by four points.

It would be unfair to say the Gunners were handed a favourable line-up in Group B, but they were expected to come out on top nonetheless.

Mikel Arteta’s troops picked up 13 points from a possible 18 (D1, L1), with their only setback coming in a 2-1 defeat to RC Lens in France.

The north London giants powered through to the round of 16 and will fancy their chances of mounting a deep run in Europe’s premier club tournament.

Arsenal’s performances in the Champions League did wonders for their UEFA club coefficient, with Arteta’s side notching 18 coefficient points – bettering last season’s tally of 17 for their participation in the Europa League.

The Gunners have collected a total of 68 coefficient points, leapfrogging north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to 21st place in UEFA’s latest ranking.

Amongst English clubs, Arsenal also displaced Tottenham in fifth place, with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United boasting more coefficient points.

What to expect?

Arsenal could be pivotal to the Premier League’s battle to secure a fifth Champions League slot for next season, with the Gunners heavily fancied to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Finishing as group winners means Arteta’s side are in line for a favourable opponent in the last 16, so a quarter-final finish is not beyond the realm of possibility for the Gunners.

While they’re unlikely to surpass their Premier League counterparts in the rankings, a deep Champions League run could see Arsenal avoid a worst-case scenario next term.

We anticipate more improvement in their UEFA coefficient ranking by the end of the season, which should ensure a spot in one of the top two pots ahead of the next group stage draw.
