Arsenal want to sign Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez

Arsenal are considering strengthening their ranks at the back this month, with a focus on the left, and Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez is on their radar, according to The Athletic.

Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko is currently suffering from a calf problem, and the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu, Thomas Partey and Jurrien Timber are currently unavailable, while Ben White has been playing through some niggling injury problems.

The Gunners desperately need to bolster their defensive options, but whether they can land Gutierrez during the January transfer window remains to be seen.

Apart from the fact that a deal would be complicated as Real Madrid own 50% of the player’s ownership rights and did include a sell-on-clause in the deal which took him to Girona in 2022, leaving the joint league leaders right now is unlikely to appeal to the 22-year-old.

Manchester United also want the Spaniard who has played a key role in the outstanding campaign Girona are having, with his high football IQ and attacking profile attracting the Red Devils.

He has a goal and an assist to his name in 18 league games and was impressive in Wednesday’s 4-3 win against Atletico Madrid and the 4-2 victory over Barcelona last month, bagging a goal.

Ian Wright recently expressed his concerns about Zinchenko and wants Arsenal to sign a new left-back this month.

“I want to get a left-back because I’m really worried about Zinchenko,” the Gunners legend said on Wrighty’s House podcast last week.

“He worries me, he does worry me.”

The 27-year-old has been defensively woeful this term and is the weakest link in the Arsenal defence, and while the Girona star will be a massive upgrade as he is the total package, a January deal does not look feasible and the Gunners may need to look elsewhere.
