Arsenal table £22 million bid for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral
|Arsenal have submitted a £22 million bid for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral as they look to sign him this month, according to the Sun.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta wants to bolster his attack ahead of the second half of 2023-24 and has been linked with Brentford hitman Ivan Toney and his Bournemouth counterpart Dominic Solanke.
However, landing either of the English duo will be impossible during the January transfer window, and Arsenal have moved on to Mayoral.
The 26-year-old has bagged 12 La Liga goals in 19 games this term after ending last term with eight league goals, and the North Londoners have been following him closely since last November.
They have now tabled an offer for him, but Getafe have rejected it and are holding out for closer to £39m for him.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will return with an improved bid, but their recent performances in front of goal have underlined their dire need for a quality number 9, and the former Real Madrid man fits the bill.
Mayoral has also created 15 chances and registered 21 shots on target, with his conversion rate better than what any Arsenal forward can boast of right now.
Getafe are currently eighth in La Liga after 19 games and are looking to break into the top-six and qualify for Europe next term, so losing their highest goalscorer midway through the campaign is unlikely to appeal to them.
However, a juicy offer from Arsenal could tempt them to do business, and the Spaniard could be keen on moving to the Premier League and helping the Gunners challenge for the title this term and going forward.
They drew blanks in two of their last three games, and failure to land a proven finisher this month could jeopardise their chances of winning silverware this term.
They were dumped out of the FA Cup by Liverpool as a result of their woeful finishing, and signing Mayoral before the transfer window closes could make all the difference.
