Arsenal striker target Borja Mayoral not for sale in January
|Arsenal are set to miss out on signing Getafe striker Borja Mayoral during the winter transfer window, according to Spanish publication AS.
The 26-year-old is currently the second top scorer in La Liga this season with 12 goals. He has also scored a couple for his club in the Copa del Rey.
A recent report claimed that the Gunners made a £22 million bid for Mayoral which was rejected, and Getafe are holding out for at least £39m.
This stance has now been dismissed by AS, who report that the Spanish outfit have no desire to sell their prized asset before the transfer deadline.
Getafe have high ambitions of qualifying for European football this term and also feel they could make a strong case to win the Copa del Rey title.
Meanwhile, Mayoral is also happy to continue with Getafe as he eyes a Euro 2024 spot with Spain.
The former Real Madrid striker does not want to hamper his selection hopes by moving to a new league and trying to adapt to a new playing style.
Arsenal still searching for a new striker
The Gunners have been far from convincing with their finishing over the past few weeks. They have scored just one goal in the last three games with an XG of almost seven.
This has led to calls from some fans to purchase a new centre-forward this month. Brentford’s Ivan Toney is no longer an option with him committing to the Bees for the season.
Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee and Getafe’s Mayoral have been linked with Arsenal lately. The latter is no longer a choice with his decision to stay put until the summer at least.
Zirkzee seems the only realistic target at the current point, but he won’t come on the cheap. It would take £50m to prise him away from Bologna, who are flying high in Serie A this term.
The former Bayern Munich striker may not be a preferred choice for some of the faithful, but he would definitely provide more firepower up front for the Gunners in the title race.
