Arsenal flop Alex Runarsson set to join Copenhagen on a free transfer
|
Arsenal are set to terminate the contract of goalkeeper Alex Runarsson before his free transfer to Copenhagen, according to journalist Daniel Nojsen.
The 28-year-old joined the Gunners from Dijon in September 2020 and made just six appearances for the club during the course of the 2020/21 campaign.
He made a number of high-profile errors during his debut season. The goalkeeper has since spent time on loan with three separate clubs including Cardiff City this term.
It is now reported that the shot-stopper will return from his loan stint in Wales. The Gunners are set to terminate his deal such that he can join Copenhagen on a free.
Arsenal should have made the decision much earlier
The Iceland ace was a surprise signing for the Gunners in 2020 after they decided to sell Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa due to his desire to play regular first-team football.
From the off, there were doubts over his overall goalkeeping ability. He made a couple of howlers during the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
There were no surprises that Arsenal signed Maty Ryan on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2021. In our view, the club could have parted ways with Runarsson much earlier.
The 27-cap international is currently one of the lowest earners at Arsenal at £15,000-a-week. They could have dealt his situation better by offloading him a couple of years ago.
His spell with Copenhagen should be interesting to watch. The Danish giants are into the last 16 of the Champions League where they are scheduled to meet Manchester City.
