Jorginho delivers dominant midfield display vs Newcastle
|
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho produced a dominant midfield performance during the 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday night.
The Italy international made his first start for the Gunners since the 3-1 triumph over Liverpool. He showed his class with a fantastic showing.
Right from the off, the 32-year-old had the better of Bruno Guimaraes in midfield and he created the chance which contributed to Kai Havertz’s goal.
The midfielder was substituted in the 89th minute. There were no surprises that he was named the man of the match for the second straight home game.
Jorginho had 109 touches with 92 successful passes. He won 100 per cent of his aerial duels and induced a couple of fouls from the Magpies.
The Italian has been in-and-out of the starting XI this season based on the opposition, but his form has been fantastic over the past few outings.
His presence in the number six role last night allowed Declan Rice to play higher up the field.
Arsenal’s victory over the Magpies has reduced the deficit to leaders Liverpool to just two points.
Most importantly, the Gunners have improved their goal difference. They now have a better GD (39) than the Reds (38) which could prove vital in future.
Arsenal’s next game will be against Sheffield United on the road on March 4. The fans will be anticipating another convincing win against the league’s worst defence.
We won’t be surprised if Jorginho is back on the bench against Sheffield as Arteta may feel he does not require two defensive midfielders for the outing.
After the visit of Bramall Lane, the Gunners have three home games on the bounce versus Brentford, Porto and Chelsea before the international break.
