Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has doubled his wages after signing a new contract, new deal will be announced after injury return

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has signed a new contract which doubles his wages to about £100,000 a week, according to the Sun.

The Japan international is currently out injured after picking up a knock while away at the Asian Cup in January.

Tomiyasu has not played for Arsenal since the loss at Fulham on New Year’s Eve, having been injured both before and after that game, but he is very close to returning and an announcement will be made confirming his extension once he is back on his feet.

The 25-year-old is expected to be in the matchday squad when the Gunners host Brentford on Saturday, so his new deal could be announced any day now.

The likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, William Saliba, Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale have been rewarded with new deals in recent months, and Tomiyasu is next in line.

There are also ongoing talks concerning Ben White, while Arsenal want to hand Jorginho a new deal as his current contract expires at the end of the season.

Tomiyasu had featured in 20 games across all competitions this term before his fitness issues resurfaced, and having him back and extending his deal will be much-needed boosts.

Arsenal are in a three-horse title race with Liverpool and Manchester City, and they need all the squad depth they can get as we approach the Premier League run-in.

They are also looking to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after losing 1-0 to FC Porto in the first-leg of the round of 16, and Tomiyasu could feature in the return leg at Emirates Stadium next Tuesday.

His new contract would have been announced by then and the former Bologna star will be raring to go once he returns to action.

Having been constantly linked with an Arsenal exit last summer, the Gunners have ensured that they have retained the services of one of their most important players for the long-term and will keep on enjoying his versatility.
