PFA coach developers were left hugely impressed with the tactical know-how of Arsenal star Jorginho during UEFA B Licence course
|Arsenal midfielder Jorginho impressed PFA coach educator David Bridges when he completed a bespoke UEFA B Licence course last month alongside Aaron Ramsdale.
During one of the sessions, the Gunners stars pitted one half of the club’s under-15s squad against the other at Hale End, and the goalkeeper’s team kept winning the ball and scoring having been tasked with pressing high and stealing possession.
Jorginho’s team were tasked with playing out from a goal kick and working the ball into the opposition half.
Bridges and his colleague Matty Joseph noticed the space in behind that could allow the Italian’s team to go a bit longer.
They told Jorginho his side could miss out that first press and make it easier, but he rejected their suggestions as he had other plans.
What the Arsenal midfielder did next blew Bridges and Joseph away, and it is not a surprise that William Saliba thinks that the 32-year-old has the best football IQ in the Premier League.
“He went back into the session, inverted both full-backs into central midfield and put the midfield pivot right next to the goalkeeper on the goal line,” Bridges told The Athletic.
“His team got out of the press four times out of the next four. We looked at each other and went, ‘Wow, what just happened there?’.”
The Italy international told the PFA representatives that he simply took away what Ramsdale’s team were going after as they were marking one-versus-one against his team.
Jorginho moved a player inside and another back and the opposition did not know who to go with, and the Italian’s team easily found the spare man having disrupted things.
Having been seen coaching his Gunners teammates from the sidelines whenever he is warming up, that Jorginho is already pursuing his managerial dreams ahead of his post-playing days is not surprising.
He has the brains and could now be looking to apply for the UEFA A Licence and UEFA Pro Licence coaching badges.
