Roy Keane makes honest title prediction on Arsenal after Liverpool-Man City draw
|
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has said that Arsenal won’t fade in the Premier League title race against Liverpool and Manchester City this season.
The Gunners have been in scintillating form in the Premier League this year. They recently registered their eighth straight win of the campaign to move to the top of the table.
Their spot was secured yesterday after Liverpool and Manchester City shared the spoils at Anfield. Mikel Arteta’s side are currently at the summit with a superior goal difference over the Reds.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw at Anfield, Keane said that he had no doubts over City winning the title last term, but he has started doubting their credentials in recent weeks.
The former United captain added that Liverpool are a threat to the Cityzens for the title and the same goes for Arsenal, who are physically much stronger than last season.
Keane feels the Gunners won’t fade in the title pursuit unlike the previous campaign.
He said on Sky Sports: “I can’t call it. Last year, I never had any doubt that Man City would win the title. I was strong on City a few weeks ago but I’m doubting that a little bit.”
“Whenever you watch Liverpool, they’re performing, creating chances and scoring goals. I look at Arsenal and think physically they’re a much stronger team compared to last year. I don’t think they’ll fade on that side of it.
“The recruitment, the players they have brought in. They added strength and quality. When I look at Arsenal, mindset, they look ready for the challenge. I don’t know who to go for this year.”
Arsenal had a difficult run before the New Year. They picked up just four points from a possible 15 which saw them drop five points behind Liverpool for the top position.
The Gunners were also ousted from the FA Cup by the Reds in the third round. This led to suggestions that the club needed to spend on a marquee striker in January.
However, the club have had a sensational turnaround since the winter break. The Dubai training camp has done wonders for them with eight consecutive league wins.
This has put them back at the top of the table for the first time since Boxing Day. The onus is now on the Gunners to continue the good form over the next 10 games.
They have a huge challenge against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium at the end of the month. If they were to beat them, it would be a huge title statement.
Arsenal’s immediate focus will be on the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie versus Porto. They trail 1-0 after a forgettable showing in Portugal.
The Gunners failed to muster a single shot on target at the Estadio do Dragao, but the fans will be hoping that the club can turnaround the deficit at the Emirates tomorrow.
