Viktor Gyokeres finally breaks silence after report claimed he wants Arsenal move
|Red-hot striker Viktor Gyokeres has opened up on his future after strong links with a move to Arsenal this summer.
First, it was claimed that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is very keen to bring Gyokeres to the Emirates (The Mirror).
Then, it was suggested by Correio de Manha (print edition, page 11) that the 26-year-old centre-forward is desperate to join the Gunners before the start of next season.
The former Coventry City striker has been in stunning form this season, with 41 goals and 15 assists in 47 games in all competitions to his name for Sporting CP.
He definitely won’t come cheap, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that Sporting will demand the entirety of his €100 million (£85 million) release clause this summer.
That said, it could be argued that the Sweden international is exactly the type of player Arsenal need to reach the truly elite level.
So what does the player himself think about his future…does it lie in Lisbon or North London?
Viktor Gyokeres opens up on Sporting future
The Sporting striker spoke to reporters after his side won their second league title in the last three seasons under Ruben Amorim.
And he suggested that he cannot promise anything, as quoted by Bola Na Rede:
“It was a good day and we will definitely celebrate. Let’s see what will happen, it’s just beginning. It’s my first title. I explain the celebration at the end of the season, after the league and cup. Let’s try to win everything. Rúben Amorim is a great coach, I wouldn’t mind if he continued (laughs). I had many coaches, but of course Rúben Amorim brought me here, it was very important in my career. Thank you Sportinguistas, see you soon. It’s football, I can’t promise anything, I have a contract and I won’t be sad if I stay, I’m very happy, but we’ll see what happens. We can’t predict much, but let’s see what next year will be like, we still have games this season .”
It seems like he’s very much keeping his options open there.
Despite his success out in Portugal with Sporting, joining Arsenal this summer would surely be a no-brainer for him wouldn’t it?
The Gunners seem to be on the verge of a five-year period of dominance, and getting the addition of a top-class striker over the line could be the big difference maker for Arteta.
Whether or not Viktor Gyokeres will be that man remains to be seen though.
