Italian midfielder Jorginho set to sign new one-year deal at Arsenal
|Arsenal midfielder Jorginho will sign a new deal valid until June 2025, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian midfielder was due to be out of contract at the North London club at the end of the current campaign, and he has been linked with a return to Italy.
However, Jorginho will remain with Arsenal for one more campaign and there will not be a formal option to extend the contract.
Gunners sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta both wanted to retain the services of the former Chelsea star beyond this season, and he is also more than happy to continue plying his trade with the Premier League leaders.
The 32-year-old has featured in 23 league games this term and has been a crucial member of the squad on and off the pitch.
His leadership has come in handy on the touchline too, and Arsenal know he still has plenty to offer them.
Jorginho brings much-needed quality and experience to the table, and the Gunners need him next term as they aim to challenge strongly across all competitions again.
Keeping the Italian makes sense given the fitness struggles of Ghana international midfielder Thomas Partey.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will be open to selling the former Atletico Madrid star this summer having opted to retain the services of Jorginho.
The North Londoners are expected to further bolster their squad this summer to boost their chances of beating Manchester City to the Premier League title next term, and midfield signings could be targeted should Partey leave.
They currently lead the way at the top of the table with a point after 36 games, but Man City have a game in hand.
Arsenal return to action on Sunday with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United before playing against Everton on the last day of the campaign, while Man City face Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.
