Arsenal to launch move for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino

Arsenal are prepared to launch an approach to sign one of Real Sociedad’s best players, according to Noticias de Gipuzkoa.

The Gunners have made one outfield signing in Riccardo Calafiori this summer, but they are weighing up a move for Mikel Merino.

The club have already agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old and it is now claimed that they are preparing a formal offer.

Sociedad have made a desperate attempt to keep Merino with an improved deal, but that seems unlikely to change his stance.

Their offer is way off what Arsenal are proposing. Merino has also told Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay that he wants to go to the Gunners.

Merino’s future could be resolved in the next few days after Arsenal ‘launch an offensive’.

Arsenal edging closer to Merino transfer deal

Merino has been a key player for Sociedad over the last six years. He has made close to 250 appearances, registering 27 goals and 25 assists.

The Spaniard has also caught the eye with his defensive contributions. He won the most duels across Europe’s top-five leagues (326) last term.

In our view, the Euro 2024 winner would be an ideal signing for manager Mikel Arteta. He could be rotated with Kai Havertz in central midfield.

Havertz is a more progressive midfielder, but Merino is equally good from the left central midfield role. He managed 13 goal contributions last season.

Aside from his duel-winning skills, Merino has also excelled with his recoveries and tackling. His defensive attributes could be useful in the big games.

Merino has a £56 million release clause in his contract, but Arsenal are optimistic of signing him for £21m as he has entered the last year of his deal.
