Mikel Arteta confirms Jurrien Timber is fit to face Wolves, but Tomiyasu and Tierney out

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided an injury update on three players ahead of the Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow.

The Gunners finished just two points behind Manchester City for the league title last term. They were brilliant in the back end of last season, losing just one game.

The loss to Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium proved costly in the end. The club will be aiming to go one better this time around. Ahead of the curtain-raiser, Arteta has provided an update on three players.

Jurrien Timber missed recent friendlies with a minor foot problem, but he returned to training earlier this week. Arteta has confirmed that the 23-year-old will be in the squad.

He told reporters: “Yeah he will be in the squad tomorrow.”

However, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are a few weeks away from returning to full fitness. They are recovering from knee and hamstring injuries respectively.

Arteta said on the duo: “They will be a few weeks behind still.”

Arsenal have a difficult start to the campaign on paper. They face Wolves in the season opener at home before a testing challenge against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

This will be followed by the visit of Brighton at the Emirates. After the international break, the Gunners have to face Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City on the road.

Arteta’s side have not made any significant changes to the squad with just one new signing in Riccardo Calafiori. The fans will be hoping that the club spend more before the deadline.

Arsenal are known to be interested in signing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. It remains to be seen whether a marquee striker is recruited alongside the Spanish star.
