Premier League weekend recap: Arsenal edged Leicester in late show, Man City held at Newcastle & more
|Premier League fans were treated to a goal-filled spectacle last weekend, with 34 goals scored across the board, although a number of clubs didn’t get the result they wanted.
Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool secured crucial wins to keep their early-season momentum.
However, reigning champions Manchester City were held to a draw at Newcastle United, while Aston Villa suffered a similar fate at home to Ipswich Town.
One of the most shocking results came at Old Trafford, where Manchester United were decimated by a resurgent Tottenham Hotspur side.
Meanwhile, West Ham United eked out a 1-1 draw against Brentford in the London derby as Tomas Soucek’s 54th-minute strike cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s early opener.
The East Londoners have endured an awful start to the season, but fans are still flocking to Seatsnet.com to buy West Ham tickets, hoping that Julen Lopetegui will steer the ship in the right direction.
Read on as we reflect on an eventful weekend of football in the Premier League.
Newcastle vs Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s defending champions were held to a frustrating draw against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
The buoyant Magpies bounced back from a deflating 3-1 defeat away to Fulham last weekend to claim a hard-fought draw against the champions and extend their unbeaten streak at home to 11 games.
The loss of Rodri to a season-ending injury left Man City without a world-class tempo setter, so they were occasionally overrun by Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of the park.
However, Man City had lost just one of their last 33 games against Newcastle, so a draw seemed like the most likely outcome as Anthony Gordon’s second-half penalty cancelled out Josko Gvardiol’s opener.
Man City have dropped to second in the Premier League table, one point behind pacesetters Liverpool and level on points with Arsenal in third.
Arsenal vs Leicester City
Mikel Arteta’s side survived a potential nightmare at the Emirates Stadium last weekend as they left it late to secure a crucial 4-2 victory over newly promoted Leicester City.
The Gunners were heading for a routine victory after going into half time with a comfortable two-goal cushion thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
However, Arteta’s side were stunned by a 16-minute brace from James Justin, which levelled matters with less than half an hour left on the clock.
The Foxes were under siege for most of the second half, but goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was relentless in his efforts to help his side claim a crucial point at the Emirates.
However, Steve Cooper’s side were ultimately undone as Trossard’s back-post effort was deflected over the line by Wilfred Ndidi to secure a crucial three points for the Gunners in dramatic fashion.
Kai Havertz then put the game to bed deep into stoppage time as Arsenal moved level on points with Man City at the Premier League summit.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Liverpool
Liverpool saw off a spirited Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium to record consecutive Premier League wins after their shocking defeat against Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
Ibrahim Konate gave Arne Slot’s side a crucial lead just before the half-time whistle, but Rayan Ait Nouri capitalised on a defensive mishap from the Reds to restore parity 11 minutes into the second period.
Merely five minutes later, Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah converted a spot kick to restore their lead after spurning a couple of chances earlier in the game.
The Reds saw off the Wanderers in style to claim their fifth win in six games, ending the weekend at the top of the Premier League table.
Chelsea vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Chelsea claimed their first Premier League win on home turf when they welcomed previously unbeaten Brighton & Hove Albion to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Having taken points off Manchester United and Arsenal earlier in the season, Brighton were keen to inflict a similar fate on Chelsea, and they snatched an early lead through Georginio Rutter.
However, the game quickly became the Cole Palmer show as the England international scored four times in 20 minutes to help Chelsea claim a 4-2 win, rendering Carlos Baleba’s 34th-minute strike inconsequential.
Palmer became the first player in Premier League history to score four first-half goals in the same match but could have easily bagged a double hat-trick as he missed a couple of big chances.
Nevertheless, his heroics lifted the Blues up to fourth in the Premier League table, just two points off pacesetters Liverpool.
Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
Last weekend’s blockbuster fixture saw Man United fall to a catastrophic 3-0 thumping at the hands of Tottenham at Old Trafford.
Micky van de Ven pierced through Man United with a remarkable solo run from inside his own half before teeing up Brennan Johnson to open the scoring just three minutes into the game.
Things went from bad to worse for the Red Devils as skipper Bruno Fernandes was shown a controversial red card for a shin-high challenge, but Man United kept the scoreline at 1-0 heading into the break.
However, Spurs doubled their lead two minutes after the restart through Dejan Kulusevski before summer signing Dominic Solanke wrapped up the three points with a late strike.
The win took Tottenham up to eight in the log, while Erik ten Hag’s beleaguered troops remain in the bottom half, just four points above the relegation zone.
Aston Villa vs Ipswich Town
Another one of last weekend’s shocking results came at Villa Park, where last season’s surprise package, Aston Villa, were held to a 2-2 draw by Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town.
The Tractor Boys stunned Villa Park into silence as Liam Delap opened the scoring in the eight minutes, but the Lions turned the game on its head courtesy of goals from Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins.
However, Delap netted his second of the afternoon to restore parity in the 72nd minute, and Kieran McKenna’s side held on to claim their fourth consecutive draw, which lifted them up to 15th on the table.
Meanwhile, Unai Emery’s side missed out on a chance to go level on points with league leaders Liverpool and sit fifth on the table.
Brentford vs West Ham United
Soucek’s second-half strike cancelled out Mbeumo’s early opener to claim a crucial point for West Ham and buy Julen Lopetegui a little more time to try and turn things around in East London.
The Spaniard is under increasing pressure to deliver after spending a fortune to revamp the team during the summer transfer window.
West Ham have won just one of their six games so far, accumulating a disappointing five points. They are closer to the relegation zone than the top half, and Lopetegui must find a way to arrest the slump before it’s too late.
Other results
Elsewhere, Everton claimed their first win of the season after coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Goodison Park, while Fulham ended Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten start with a 1-0 win at City Ground.
Bournemouth claimed a 3-1 win over Southampton on Monday night to round up matchday six.
