Premier League recap: Man City fall at Brighton, Ipswich claim massive scalp at Tottenham & more

Round 11 of Premier League action left us with breathtaking drama to cling to before the international break.

There were a number of thrilling games and several talking points to discuss as we await the return of club football.

One of the most shocking results came at the Amex Stadium, where Brighton & Hove Albion put Manchester City to the sword with a stunning 2-1 win.

City have been on a challenging run of form in recent weeks, but Man City tickets remain a sought-after commodity on Seatsnet.com and will remain so when club football returns.

For now, let’s take you through the Premier League grounds to recap some of the key results over the weekend.

Brighton vs Man City

City have been on their worst run of form since Pep Guardiola joined the club, and it got even worse over the weekend when Brighton inflicted their fourth consecutive defeat.

Having lost to Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth, and Sporting CP, the Cityzens suffered their fourth defeat on the bounce across all competitions – a first in Guardiola’s managerial career.

City took the lead through Erling Braut Haaland in the first half, but Brighton showed resilience against the champions, scoring twice in five minutes late on to snatch three points on the south coast.

The defeat leaves the reigning champions scrambling to catch up with runaway leaders Liverpool at the Premier League summit, sitting five points off Arne Slot’s rampant Reds.

Guardiola needs to find an antidote when club football returns, but City’s fixture run doesn’t let up as they host Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium after the international break.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Liverpool continued their exceptional start to the season with another routine home win – this time against a struggling Aston Villa side to extend their winning streak to four games on the bounce.

The Reds also stretched their unbeaten streak to 13 games across all competitions thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah on either side of half time.

Salah’s contract situation has been a major talking point since the start of the season, with the Egyptian’s current deal set to expire next summer.

Contract talks with Liverpool have yet to yield any positive results, and the club legend reminded the top brass of what he’s capable of, setting up Nunez before netting the matchwinner.

Liverpool have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points ahead of the reigning champions and nine above Arsenal.

We might just be 11 games in, but the Reds seem unstoppable at the moment. It remains to be seen if they can push on and mark the start of the post-Jurgen Klopp era with the Premier League title.

Manchester United vs Leicester City

Manchester United have been on a tear since Erik ten Hag was relieved of his duties, with Ruud van Nistelrooy steering the Red Devils to a four-match unbeaten run (W3, D1).

That run of form started with a 5-2 win against Leicester City in the fourth round of the EFL Cup, and they repeated that success over the Foxes by an identical margin just over a week later.

This time in the Premier League, United claimed a resounding 3-0 win over the Championship winners, rounding off Van Nistelrooy’s tenure as interim manager in style.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a sensational effort from long range before an own goal from Victor Kristiansen put the game beyond Leicester’s reach.

Alejandro Garnacho sealed the three points with perhaps the best goal of the game, curling a beauty past a stranded Mads Hermansen.

Despite losing just one of their last five Premier League games, the Red Devils remain rooted to the bottom of the log in 13th, but they can take solace from the fact that only four points separate them from third-placed Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle United

After a fantastic run of four games unbeaten, including a three-match winning streak, Nottingham Forest were brought back down to earth with a comprehensive 3-1 defeat against Newcastle United at City Ground.

The Tricky Trees have enjoyed an outstanding start to the season and will fancy their chances of making a real push for the continental places, but they were handed a massive reality check over the weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side went into the half-time interval with a narrow 1-0 lead, and usually, that’s enough for Forest to come away with a win or a draw.

However, Newcastle had other tricks up their sleeve. They ran riot in the second half, sealing a stunning comeback courtesy of goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton, and Harvey Barnes.

Forest have dropped out of the top four and now sit fifth, but they’re still level on points with Chelsea and Arsenal ahead of them and Brighton behind them.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have pushed up to eighth place and sit one point outside the top four.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Ipswich Town

One of the most shocking results came in north London, where Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 2-1 defeat against newly promoted Ipswich Town in a massive blow to their ambitions.

Before Sunday’s massive scalp at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, you’d have to go all the way back to 2002 for the last time Ipswich won a competitive game in the top flight.

They’ve come close on several occasions this season, but Kieran McKenna finally got their first win against a lacklustre and largely uninspiring Tottenham side.

Summer signing Sammie Szmodics gave the Tractor Boys a shocking lead before Liam Delap doubled their advantage just before half time.

Spurs looked to mount a comeback in the second half when Rodrigo Bentancur pulled one back late in the second half, but Ipswich held on to claim a massive victory.

Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham will be a major talking point over the next two weeks, but Spurs are unlikely to cut him loose after just 11 games.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

Last weekend’s Premier League action wrapped up at Stamford Bridge with a mouth-watering clash between London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal.

There were plenty of expectations in the build-up to the Clash of the Titans, and even though the first half failed to deliver the fireworks, spectators were treated to an end-to-end encounter.

Both sides were guilty of spurning chances, but Arsenal finally ignited the fuse when Martin Odegaard picked out an unmarked Gabriel Martinelli, who smashed the Gunners into the lead, beating Robert Sanchez at his near post.

Undeterred, Chelsea responded just ten minutes later with Enzo Fernandez setting up former Arsenal target Pedro Neto who rifled a ferocious effort past David Raya.

Arsenal had a gilt-edged chance to win the game with the last kick of the game, but they squandered the opportunity, although the goal would have had to survive a VAR review.

The win was enough to ensure Chelsea head into the international break in the top three, with Arsenal rounding up the Champions League places on equal points as their capital rivals.
