Arsenal sent scouts to monitor Atalanta striker in action against Young Boys

Arsenal sent scouts to monitor one of Atalanta’s in-form players on Tuesday night, according to Calciomercato journalist Maurizio Russo.

The Gunners were widely tipped to sign a new striker last summer, but nothing materialised in the end.

Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak were among their top targets, but neither of them were available. Arsenal opted against a possible alternative.

Isak is the number one target for next summer, but Russo claims that the Gunners were keeping tabs on Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The London giants were not alone with Paris Saint-Germain also tracking the Italy international, who scored a brace in the 6-1 rout of Young Boys away from home.

Arsenal keeping tabs on Retegui

The 25-year-old joined Genoa from Tigres in the summer of 2023 and had an average debut season with nine goals and three assists from 31 outings.

Despite this, Atalanta were convinced about signing him. He has repaid their faith with 14 goals and three assists from just 19 games in all competitions.

The Argentina-born star has been brilliant with his finishing. He has converted 27 percent of his shots in Serie A into goals in the current campaign.

He has a passing accuracy of almost 80 percent, but averages only 11 passes per game. In our view, this could hinder his prospects of joining Arsenal.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta prefers a centre-forward who can link-up play regularly in the final third. Ball control has been a potential weakness for Retegui.

Keeping this in mind, we don’t anticipate the Gunners to make an approach for the £23 million-rated star.

Arsenal could prefer to make a huge outlay on Isak instead due to his vast Premier League experience.

The Swede could leave Newcastle United if they don’t qualify for the Champions League.
