Raheem Sterling fails to impress as Arsenal beat Girona in Champions League

Arsenal completed the league phase of the Champions League with a 2-1 win over Girona on the road on Wednesday night.

Manager Mikel Arteta made seven changes to the starting line-up, as the Gunners were pretty much guaranteed a top-eight finish.

Raheem Sterling got the nod in his preferred left-wing role but the Englishman failed to make any impact over the course of 90 minutes.

He had a passing accuracy of 81 percent and lost possession on 15 occasions. Sterling failed to deliver a cross or a key pass in the game.

The winger was booked late on for diving in the box. His night ended on a sour note. He missed the chance to score from the penalty spot.

The Chelsea loanee has been handed a fair number of chances to impress Arteta, but he has been unable to make sufficient goal contributions.

He was undoubtedly the worst player on the pitch at Girona and received a 4/10 rating from football.london for his display.

Arteta has a simple decision to drop him to the bench when the Gunners host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ethan Nwaneri produced a fine performance from the right wing. He scored a sensational goal with a curling strike from the edge of the box.

The 17-year-old should keep his place against City. Leandro Trossard could be dropped alongside Sterling.

We anticipate Gabriel Martinelli to get the nod on the left wing with Kai Havertz up front.

Martinelli could use his pace to exploit Matheus Nunes who has played as a makeshift right-back for City.

Arsenal are six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. The upcoming clash against City is a must-win to stay in the title hunt.
